In the early summer of 1776, Thomas Jefferson traveled to Philadelphia to join the Second Continental Congress. While staying in the city, Jefferson had cabinet maker Benjamin Randolph build him a small lap desk. It was upon this desk that Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence. The document and the desk have since come to serve as key relics of the Revolutionary period.
