This purple velvet dress, made in the era of the Civil War, reflects the experiences of two very different American women. One was Mary Todd Lincoln, the First Lady who wore the dress to a reception at the White House in 1864. The other was Elizabeth Keckley, the dressmaker who created most of Mrs. Lincoln's fashionable gowns and who probably designed and made this one.
